Plaza Italia - Palermo

Buenos Aires - Argentina

Plaza Italia, Buenos Aires

Being the center of the Palermo suburb, this area is known for the great amount of traffic, both vehicle and pedestrian. The central point is the square known as Plaza Italia. Of all the non Spanish-speaking countries, Italy (Italia) was the first to have its name given to one of the city's squares of Buenos Aires. Why was that? In 1904 the local Italian community donated a statue of Giuseppe Garibaldi (an Italian national hero). As a consequence the city council changed the name of the square from Plaza de los Portones to Plaza Italia.

If you look across the road towards the entrance of the Buenos Aires Zoo, you will see the 'Mateos' or horse-drawn carriages that take tourists around nearby streets.
