Puerto Iguazu

Argentina

The town that hosts most tourists while visiting the famous Iguazú Falls on the Argentinean side has to be Puerto Iguazú. It is a pleasant enough small town with a quirky road lay out. Although it is small, it has everything a tourist needs for a day or two. Lots of places to develop pictures and a plethora of basic hostels and restaurants as well as an up scale one for travelers who don't like to leave their comfort behind. Ironically hot water appears difficult to come by in many of the hostels through out the city.

The city is located just a few minutes from the falls where the Iguazú River meets the Parana River.

While here most tourists visit not only the amazing Iguazú Falls but also the Itaipu Dam, (which is located across the border from Argentina, although relatively close) and explore some of the rainforest that comprises the national park. Other than that, there isn't must to do in the city.

While there aren't really many different places to go out, this doesn't seem to be a problem for most travelers, as most plan early mornings to visit the natural attractions and there is always a relaxed party atmosphere with backpackers meeting up and often sharing a bottle of wine or two over dinner.

Everyone is always coming or going there so it is a great place to talk to others about their travel experiences and see who is going where. The bus station is a place to do this, and there is an information booth there as well where you can pick up brochures.

How to Get There and Away

There is an international airport located only 17 km from the city. It is small but stays busy with continual waves of tourists.

There is also a major bus station in the city where buses come often from all the major cities in the area and neighboring countries.

Buses leave regularly from Puerto Iguazú to the Centro de Informes for tours of the Iguazú falls.

Where to Stay

Timbó Posada: Best to visit this place in warm weather, as the showers aren't as hot as you would like and the breakfast area isn't insulated like a normal room. However, it is a very likable place with a good breakfast and good information about the falls and surrounding parks. Plus it is perfectly located near the bus station and all of the good local restaurants while still remaining that connected to nature feel. You can watch hummingbirds in the morning from one of their hammocks! (Av. Misiones 147)

Also located close to the bus station there is Guembe Hostal, which is a nice little place. The biggest problem is the lack of showers, and guests sometimes need to line up for their turn, however you can always just take a dip in the pool and not worry too much. A basic breakfast is included. (El Uru 120)

Where to Eat

Along the main road (Av. Victoria Aguirre) you can find the food court full of several different options for casual dining, namely pizza and beer.

Charo: A good place for the traditional Argentinean barbecue, grilled meats make up a majority of the menu. (Av. Córdoba 118)
