A Chunk of Chile with a Dash of South America

Living and travelling in South America from our base in Chile since 1997. I have personally experienced the extremes here, living in a shed without a bathroom in a poor dangerous part of town to the other extreme of having an elegant dinner with the President at the palace. This blog is about things that I have done or that have caught my attention here as well as travel information that may be useful.

Peru Earthquake

I large earthquake hit Peru a few hours ago at 6.41pm local time. It reached 7.9 on the Richter scale and was centered just 160km (90 miles) south of Lima. The Director of the Institute of Geophysics said that it has been the strongest quake to hit the coastal area of Peru in 50 years. Reports and still hard to come by though at least 17 people have been killed and many more injured. Strong aftershocks have been causing further panic and they are likely to continue over the next week.
