A Chunk of Chile with a Dash of South America

Living and travelling in South America from our base in Chile since 1997. I have personally experienced the extremes here, living in a shed without a bathroom in a poor dangerous part of town to the other extreme of having an elegant dinner with the President at the palace. This blog is about things that I have done or that have caught my attention here as well as travel information that may be useful.

Chilean License Plate Numbers

As from tomorrow (3rd of September 2007) Chilean Car License Plate numbers are about to change. Until recently the license plate numbers have been two letters followed by four digits (e.g. ZY 1234). Though now the country has run out of possible sequences using that combination so as from tomorrow, a new letter/number combination will start appearing.

The new plates will now contain a combination of 4 letters and 2 numbers (e.g. BBBB 12)
The new license plates will only contain 18 different letters from the Spanish alphabet, leaving out all the vowels (AEIOU) and the letter ñ which could easily be confused with the letter n, as well the letter Q with could have been confused with the letter O.

The first plate will be BBBB 10, the next BBBB 11 and so on until BBBB 99.
After that last one, the next number plate will be BBBC 10 and so on.

This new change will allow for at least 9 million different new combinations. Of course some 'obsene' combinations will not be made.
